Sea, Sand and SU Salcombe

Another event which was to play a key part in enabling us to get things off the ground took me away from Oxfordshire, to the breathtaking location of the Salcombe Estuary in Devon.

SU (Scripture Union) Salcombe Camp was the name of an annual event that transformed a fairly ordinary, almost level, agricultural pasture into accommodation and an adventure HQ for up to 150 young people and leaders.

I had heard about this camp a couple of years earlier from my mother who had met the SU Salcombe leaders when she had spoken at their church. Having had no background at all in adventure holidays or Christian summer camps when I was growing up, I did not know what to expect when I made the journey down to the camping field for the first time.

I arrived for the work party weekend, 2 days before the camp was due to begin. I had been told what I needed to bring to stay comfortable for nearly two weeks in a scout tent with one other leader and six ‘Senior campers’. My job on the team was ‘Senior Camper Leader’. I had no idea what this might entail other than that the Senior Campers were in charge of ‘the Lats’, a euphemistic term for the camp toilets.

It was difficult to believe that the piles of poles, canvas and adventure kit would all be transformed into accommodation for 150 leaders and campers over the coming 2 days. At least there was a marquee and two smaller standing tents already in place, but there was clearly a massive job ahead of us all to create functional, even safe accommodation and washing facilities for so many.
